Someone I'm Not

About a month ago I watch the Film Girl, Interrupted and at the time thought very little of it. However, over the past month, numerous times I have been struck with how often we find ourselves becoming something we were not intended to become. In the film Winona Rider's character is admitted to a Psychiatric Ward for borderline depression issues revolving around suicide. As the movie progresses her character begins to adapt to the culture of the Ward, begins refusing her treatments and decides to live in a place where she does not belong.

As a person who desires to seek God, I am confronted with my decisions to tread down paths towards something I am not. Many of these paths seem like logical choices but when looked at closely they are not Christ-Centered. The book of Ephesians speaks numerous times about who are once in Christ and how we are called to live. Yet God does not force us to live His way but gives us the opportunity to choose. It is my goal to not adapt myself to my 'Ward" but daily set out to "live a life worthy of the calling you have received".

Happy New Year

It was New Year's Eve and my wife and I had holed up for a nice long evening of movies and a countdown. The rundown of movies was Four Brothers, The 40 Year Old Virgin, and Crash. The first 2 films were okay, personally I had expected more from Four Brothers but was left confused. Fortunately all was redeemed by Crash.

In my opinion this is a must see movie. It provokes and shocks as the characters clash against each other from start to finish. Each individual portrayed reflects a deep dark part of us all where no one is safe from our racism, sexism, or corruption. Although vulgar throughout the acting, direction, and character development should rocket this film into contention for 'Best Picture' at the Academy Awards.

Symbolically Brilliant

I watch a lot of movies. It is an easy way for me to lose myself in someone else's world for a few moments and return. Recently I spent some time in the land of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and not only was this film dryly hilarious, but it was an animated commentary about us and our world. I have never read the book, but have heard it is 2x as good (like usual) and plan to in the near future.

From Johnny to Joaquin

Ever since U2’s 10th LP, Zooropa I have longed for a voice and style as rough and crisp as Johnny Cash. It was my first introduction to the man who became the true voice of love, lose, and playing cards.

I am riding the fence of excitement and fear when it comes to James Mangold’s “Walk the Line”. I love movies and I love the way many are able to bring a new voice to an old story. That fact enthuses me about this film. However, the other side is a fear of Johnny Cash being transformed from the Man in Black to a Man on a Hollywood Star.

I am sure I will indulge myself in this film and more than likely I will be overly critical and walk away feeling as if I have been tricked by Hollywood. On the other hand, I am sensing it will give me a bigger picture of Mr. Cash and his life as a musician. I do hope they add a scene where Mr. Cash has a vision of Jesus and He better have blonde hair.
